Our modern society has coasted on the belief that we’ve surpassed the barriers previous civilizations faced. We’re destined to colonize the galaxy, and only a black swan event can stop us.

Yet, our doom is inevitable, as I discussed in part 2 of this series. Collapse is ensured for any organism that grows above the carrying capacity of its limited environment.

But it’s one thing to say that all empires must end, it’s another to say that the end is imminent. The question is, have we surpassed what mother Earth can freely give? And if so, when will the taxman come?
